Kilkenny Castle

google maps reference

Instantly recognisable, Kilkenny Castle dominates the city centre of Kilkenny, with it’s immense stone turrets breaching the city street itself. It stands on high ground looking over the city alongside the river Nore.

kilkenny Castle

Originally built as an Anglo-Norman castle for William Marshal, the 4th Earl of Pembroke in the 13th century, the site of Kilkenny Castle soon became the seat of the Butlers (1391), a very powerful and influential family of the time, who continued to live at Kilkenny castle for over 6 centuries. The castle was in Butler ownership until quite recently in relative terms, when in 1967 Arthur Butler, the 6th Marquess of Ormonde, presented the castle to the residents of the city of Kilkenny. It cost the city the token sum of £50.

Since ’67, the castle has undergone much renovation and restoration, as well as a number of archaeological digs in the castle and surrounding park. Its a bit more luxurious than our bed and breakfast Kilkenny, but you can't stay there!

kilkenny Castle

The park itself comprises 50 acres and is open year round, 9am to 8.30 in summer, 9am to 4.30 in winter, all completely free. When out for a walk in the park, be sure to to get down to the furthest point from the castle, where the ducks on the lake await some bread all day long!

There is also many family fun activities organised in the park, and there is an excellent, extensive and colourful playground. Ask us at the bed and breakfast Kilkenny for a list of the ongoing events at the castle!
