Rothe House

google maps reference

Sitting on the side of Parliament in the heart of Kilkenny City, Rothe House was built by John Rothe in 1594, and is the sole standing example of an early 17th century merchant’s townhouse across the whole of Ireland. The Rothe Family controlled Kilkenny’s trade and were a powerful force in government from the Middle Ages right up to the 17th Century. In fact, the whole of Kilkenny was controlled by no more than ten families, with the key trade families also doubling as powerful political dynasties.

Rothe House

Those of you familiar with the history of English monarchies and their associated architecture will recognise it as a middle class residence from the Tudor period. Behind the scenes, Rothe comprises of a complex of three separate stone buildings, built at different times spanning 16 years, 1594, 1604 and finally 1610.

It also held a school for the local families and Thomas McDonagh taught here. McDonagh is a significant figure in Irelands history as he was one of the co-signee’s of the 1916 Declaration of Irish Independence. Crucial to it’s relevance to ancient Irish architecture, much of the original features still stand to this day, just like they did the day they were built.

Today, it is the home of the Kilkenny Archaeological Society since 1962 and is also the headquarters of the Heritage Society of Ireland.
